Long Straw
Long straw is the same straw material as combed wheat reed whilst growing, but differs in the way it is harvested and applied. It arrives to the thatcher in a much more unkempt bundle known as a truss, and has to be shaken and prepared into Yealms.
During the process both ears and butt ends are mixed, and therefore both are exposed to the weather on the finished thatch, which gives a more poured on, shaggy effect than either of the others.
